Homestead National Monument of America

8523 W State Hwy 4
Beatrice, NE 68310
(402) 223-3514

Description:

Preserving the first tract of land that was designated as a homestead through the Homestead Act of 1862, the Homestead National Monument of America pays tribute to this landmark act. Under the rules of this act, 160 acres of land were free to almost any person who chose to claim it, offering an unprecedented opportunity for anyone to become a landowner. Visit the Homestead Heritage Center, the park's indoor historical museum that contains displays and artifacts related to the act and the area's inhabitants. Also on the site is the Freeman School, an authentic 19th century school that area children attended, and the Palmer-Epard Cabin, built in 1867 for the Palmer family to live in. Occupying land originally claimed by Daniel Freeman, the park is surrounded by 240 acres of land that offer many walking and short hiking trails for visitors to travel and provide scenic vistas of the surrounding Nebraska landscape. The monument sits four miles west of Beatrice, next to Cub Creek.
